Gemma Collins has admitted that she is ready to sell her sex tape for £1 million – and based on what other celebs have made from the ‘leak’ of their tapes, it may make perfect business sense.
The release of Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson’s tape in 1995 changed the business for ever – and introduced the world to the viral video – and despite claims that 54-minute tape made an estimated $77 million in under 12 months, the pair have always denied making money off the sale of the tape, handing over the copyright after years of trying to halt the tape’s reach.
Not everyone has been so secret about their bedroom antics though…
5- Paris Hilton:
In 2004, socialite Paris Hilton, 19, and her then-boyfriend Rick Salomon recorded themselves having sex in a hotel room, shot in night vision.
Hilton claimed that she was ‘out of it’ during the act, and Salomon then sued her for defamation.
She countersued and attempted to stop the distribution of the tape, and the pair settled out of court in July 2005 with ownership of the tape being split 50/50.
Hilton continues to receive royalties for its distribution, and it is thought that Hilton still earns more than $3 million (£2.2 million) a year from her sex tape.
Still, Gemma should perhaps take Paris’s word of warning.
In 2011, she told Piers Morgan on CNN that she hates being known for the tape: ‘I didn’t want to be known as that. And now when people look at me they think that I’m something I’m not just because of one incident one night with someone who I was in love with.’
The reality TV star attracted controversy over a sex tape featuring her performing oral sex on her significantly older husband, Doug Hutchison.
Courtney was paid $1 million (£754,000) – released through Vivid Entertainment, the tape reportedly made $1.2 million (£905,000) – but she claimed at the time that she planned to donate her payout to charity.
4- Dustin Diamond:
Former Saved By The Bell star Diamond Dustin allegedly appeared in one of the most shocking sex tapes in 2006, featuring the actor and two women.
He claimed that he saw a news piece on Hilton’s tape that claimed she had made $14 million (£10.5 million) after its release and that his pals joked that he had to be ‘worth at least a million’.
However, Diamond later went on to say that he actually used a body double and that ‘needless to say it did not make millions’.
3- Mimi Faust:
In 2014, the Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta star Mimi Faust decided to film a sex tape with her then-boyfriend Nikko Smith.
The pair were paid $100,000 (£75,400) for the rights to their sex tape, and it went on to sell out in its first week of release with pre-sales allegedly reaching $400,000 (£301,000).
Mimi though has a different point of view to Hilton, telling friends: ‘I was thinking about me and my family and doing it because I want to, ain’t no shame in this game here.’
2- Farrah Abraham:
The Teen Mom star made a sex tape with porn star James Deen, and claimed at the time of its release that it was filmed ‘privately celebrate her awesome body forever’ and not for money.
However the truth always comes out and Dean soon admitted that he was paid for the film which was recorded with the sole purpose of being sold to Vivid Entertainment.
It later emerged that Farrah was given an advance of $1.5 million (£1.3 million) plus 30% of residuals, which came to $60,000 (£45,000) a month at the height of the sex tape’s fame.
It is thought the star has earned over $3 million (£2.2 million) from her sex tape to date.
1- Kim Kardashian:
Kim Kardashian has perhaps had the biggest influence on celebrity sex tapes of all time.
Her tape with then-boyfriend was released in 2007 and it was claimed that her mother Kris Jenner negotiated the sale of the tape for an alleged $5 million (£3.7 million) after a lawsuit to stop its distribution was settled.
That tape however led to Kim and her entire family gaining their own E! reality TV show and 11 years later Kim is arguably the most famous women in the world, married to Kanye West and becoming as known for her business acumen as the tape itself.
Kim however has always denied claims that she was involved in the sale of the tape: ‘I’m not desperate, I would never try to sell a sex tape.
‘It would humiliate me and my family. I don’t need the money. It’s something I feel very betrayed by, but I’m not pointing any fingers.’
