His wedding to Amal Alamuddin will be at a register office in west London and will be attended only by close friends and family.
But there will be a far bigger, more glamorous second ceremony in romantic Venice.
Details of Clooney’s complicated nuptial plans were revealed in magazine US Weekly.
He dropped the bombshell that “in a couple of weeks” he would wed human rights lawyer Amal, 36, only a few days ago.
Previously it was thought they would marry in Lake Como in northern Italy, where Clooney, 53, has a £28million home.
But now it has been disclosed they will first tie the knot at a formal civil ceremony at Chelsea Old Town Hall. The Venice bash is likely to be on September 27, with an expected 60 guests including Clooney’s movie pals such as Matt Damon, 43.
Last month Amal visited Kensington and Chelsea register office to get the wedding licence.
George started dating his London-based barrister fiancée last September. They became engaged in April, with Clooney’s pals expressing amazement that he had decided to settle down.
Ocean’s Eleven star Clooney – who has previously described himself as “a lousy husband” – said at a recent charity gala in Florence, Italy: “I can’t wait to tell Amal, ‘I love you more than anything and I can’t wait to be your husband’.”
