Doll Festival (Konosu Bikkuri Hinamatsuri) in Japan

Hinamatsuri, also called Doll's Day or Girls' Day, is a special day celebrate in Japan. Hinamatsuri is celebrated each year on March 3. Platforms covered with a red carpet are used to display a set of ornamental dolls representing the Emperor, Empress, attendants, and musicians in traditional court dress of the Heian period.

As the festival has grown over the years the dolls have become more elaborate and more expensive. One can guess that people no longer want to set these little treasures to drift on a river. The trend now is to display the dolls on the house and save them for the following years' festivals. The main dolls used in the displays are "Odairi-sama," a prince and "Ohina-sama," a princess.

Japanese ornamental dolls (hina dolls) are displayed on a seven-meter-high pyramid with over 1,800 hina dolls for the Konosu Bikkuri Hinamatsuri or doll festival at Konosu City Hall, Saitama prefecture. Hinamatsuri, also know as Girls' Day, is celebrated in Japan usually on March 3. The festival will be held here until March 8.
