Saoirse Una Ronan is an Irish-American actress. She was born on born 12 April 1994. Born in New York and raised in County Carlow, Ireland, Ronan began her acting career by appearing as a guest actor on television shows at the age of nine. She had her feature film debut in the 2007 romantic comedy I Could Never Be Your Woman. The same year, she came to international prominence after co-starring as Briony Tallis in the film Atonement, for which she was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress-Motion Picture and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, making her one of the youngest actresses to receive an Oscar nomination. In 2008 she starred in the science fiction fantasy film City of Ember, for which she was nominated for an Irish Film and Television Award and in 2009, she landed the lead role in Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones for which she was awarded a Broadcast Film Critics Association Award for Best Young Performer, a Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor, and was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
Ronan continued to receive attention from wider audiences, gaining praise for her performance as a child assassin in Hanna, for which she received a London Film Critics' Circle nomination for Young British Performer of the Year; she received nominations for the same award for starring in the epic true story The Way Back (2010) and the horror fantasy thriller Byzantium (2012). In 2013, she starred in the romantic science-fiction film "The Host", for which she was nominated for the Teen Choice Award for Choice Movie Actress-Sci-fi/Fantasy. She also had roles in the 2014 films Muppets Most Wanted and The Grand Budapest Hotel. In 2015, Ronan starred as Eilis Lacey in John Crowley's romantic historical period drama Brooklyn, for which she received critical acclaim and garnered nominations for the BAFTA Award, the SAG Award, the Golden Globe Award, and the Academy Award for Best Actress.
In February 2016, Ronan is set to make her Broadway debut in a revival of The Crucible, playing the role of Abigail Williams.
On her name, she said, "'Searsha' is how Irish people pronounce it, but I would pronounce it 'Sersha,' like 'inertia'  It's Irish for 'freedom.'" In 2012, Ronan briefly dated actor George MacKay. They met whilst filming their movie How I Live Now, according to its director." In May 2015, Ronan backed the Yes side in the Marriage Equality Referendum regarding an amendment to the constitution of Ireland to mandate provision for same-sex marriage. Speaking at a "Get out the vote" event organised by Yes Equality, Ronan said "It’s like when black and white people couldn’t marry, Protestants and Catholics couldn't marry for a long time, and you think of it as being so ridiculous now... these are all things that we consider to be so backwards and dated, and it will be viewed as that if we get a No vote." She holds dual citizenship of Ireland and the United States. As of January 2016, Ronan resides in Manhattan, New York City, U.S.
